Regional NGO Cooperation for Coastal Conservation
2024 Workshop: Understanding Coastal Communities, Small-scale Fisheries and Climate Resilience in Southeast Asia and China

In response to climate change disasters and to strengthen South-South cooperation in climate adaptation, China Blue and Dialogue Earth jointly organized the workshop "Understanding Coastal Communities, Small-scale Fisheries and Climate Resilience in Southeast Asia and China" in Bali, Indonesia, on September 25-26, 2024. The event brought together approximately 30 representatives from more than ten research institutions and marine conservation NGOs from China, Indonesia, and the UK.
The workshop fostered collaboration between NGOs of China and Indonesia to enhance climate resilience of coastal fisheries. Participants discussed climate risks and shared experiences in fisheries management, ecosystem protection, and community transition. Experts highlighted climate change's impacts, emphasizing community protection of nearshore ecosystems. Indonesian participants shared experiences in community self-organization, fisher financial management, and women's empowerment. Discussions covered OECM (Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures) and explored cooperation plans including research exchanges, technical cooperation, and youth talent development.


2024 Regional NGO Cooperation Forum for Sustainable Coastal Community

On April 22, 2024, China Blue successfully hosted the "2024 Regional NGO Cooperation Forum for Sustainable Coastal Community" in Haikou. Under the theme "Shared Challenges, Shared Vision," the forum brought together over 70 representatives from nearly 40 NGOs and research institutions across China, the Philippines, and Indonesia to explore collaborative solutions for coastal ecosystem conservation, nearshore fisheries resource management, and community sustainable development.
Indonesian organizations LINI and JARI, based in Bali and Lombok Islands respectively, shared their innovative practices in integrating ecotourism with coral reef restoration and engaging local fishers in scientific monitoring programs. Tambuyog Development Center from Manila, Philippines, highlighted the critical role of women's empowerment in addressing poverty challenges within fishing communities. Chinese organizations, including China Blue and the Mangrove Conservation Foundation (MCF), presented their approaches to localized policy implementation and community-based mangrove protection.
Following the discussions, participants conducted field visits to Rongshanliao and Beigang Island, two demonstration sites showcasing successful fishery transition models. The forum identified six key areas for future collaboration, including youth capacity building and women's empowerment, marking a significant step toward establishing a regional fisheries conservation network.
